Warren Buffett Reveals: How To Get Everything You Want In Life

We’ve all heard of Warren Buffett.  Multi billionaire, the greatest investor of the 20th century, philanthropist, BFF to Bill Gates. He’s given people a lot of great advice over the years about how to invest their money. But, this one bit he gave his personal pilot of 10 years, Mike Flint, will teach you how to get everything you want in life.

It all started one day when Mike told Warren about his career goals. I’m not sure why Warren proceeded to give him this advice, since I wasn’t actually there (that was probably obvious).  Maybe Mike sounded confused, indecisive or overwhelmed with too many things on his plate.  Maybe he has bright, shiny light syndrome, like I do – you know, the one where you start and stop projects, like every week, when something new and exciting comes around.

Well, anyway, no matter what the reason is, I’m sure Warren felt like his buddy, Mike, needed to get some direction.  So, Warren told him to follow these 4 steps…

How to get everything you want in life:

1) Take out a piece of paper and write down his top 25 (career, life, etc.) goals.

2) Then, he told him to circle the top 5 goals from the list.  Then, take the top 5 and write them on a separate piece of paper.

3) With 2 lists in front of him, Mike said something like, “Oh I get it.  I should concentrate on these top 5 things and only work on the other 20 when I have the time, right?”  Warren, surprised him with a, “NO!”

4) Warren told Mike to take the first list – the one with the other 20 things not circled – and destroy it.  Yes, destroy it!

Burn it, cut it up, eat it.  Whatever works.  Just get rid of it so you never get to look at it again.  Ever. Harsh, I know but this is the secret sauce to achieving everything you want in life.

When I did this exercise yesterday it only took my about 30 minutes.  It was quick and painless.

It seems like such a simple thing to do – create a list and then choose- but it is soooo very powerful. I have to credit this process for helping me realize what I really wanted to do as far as a career (I prefer to call it my purpose or my calling, but for the sake of simplicity I’ll refer to it here as a career.)

Up until I wrote the second list, I was one of those people who was really busy doing a hell of a lot of nothing.  I looked busy, acted busy, I even sounded busy. And in my mind I even thought I was busy.  And in some ways I was.

I recently created a personal development book club, called, Boundless Book Club, which takes space on the world wide web.  I attempted to create an Amazon store, but when I couldn’t get the template to work, I just gave up. And, I was just about to finish up the first draft of an ebook, which most likely would have gotten me a few thousand new subscribers to my website, but not in a different niche than the one I really want to be in.

Needless to say, up until I completed Mr. Buffett’s exercise, I was merely chasing the next shiny object(s), the rabbits, or whatever you want to call this type of mania. I have clarity for the first time in a very long time.

Today was the first day that I actually sat down at my computer and knew exactly what I needed to do.  No confusion. None!  I’m excited about what I’m going to accomplish. And more importantly, I know exactly what it is I want to do with my life and what I need to work on every day to get it.

This top 25 exercise can be done for just about every aspect of your life, including your life goals and desires,  – which I also did and found hugely beneficial.  It helped me realize that the big house and the new car was not as important to me right now as staying at home with my kids and travelling more as a family.

Of course, it would make sense to do this exercise every year or two because as life changes so will your interests and priorities.

Give a try!  What do you have to lose except wasted time working on things that won’t get what you deep down truly want in life.

Let me know how it goes by leaving a comment below…
